A YOUNG Seaham musician has been enjoying the spotlight after being picked for a prominent role in a charity concert. David McCourt, 16, of Daphne Crescent, Parkside, played lead violin for the City of Sunderland Millennium Orchestra during a performance at Sunderland Empire.

The teenager only started studying the violin in November 1997, but already tutors students at Seaham Philharmonic Academy of Music at weekends.

But despite his obvious talent, David, who is studying four science A-levels at Durham New College, is not considering a career as a musician.

He said: "I want to keep playing the violin as a hobby, but I want to pursue a career in science or teaching."
