HALLELUJAH — here comes Sunderland’s first symphony orchestra!

It’s early days yet, but local musicians show that the city’s bid to enter the classical realm is well under way, as they gathered for their first rehearsal at a city centre church.

They are all members of the fledgling "CoSMOS" (City of Sunderland Millennium Orchestral Society), which aims to have a full-blown 60 to 70-piece symphony orchestra up and running early in the year 2000.

A modest movement into carols and hymns is planned at West Park United Reformed Church for December 6, but the full, inaugural concert is scheduled to celebrate the leap year, on February 29, also at West Park UR Church.

Pictured tuning his double Bass at the first rehearsal is Raymond Newton.
