PREVIEW by Alistair Robinson

SUNDERLAND Symphony Orchestra will pay a 60th birthday tribute to the heroes of the Second World War tonight.

In a patriotic and nostalgic programme, Sunderland's Sarah and Gemma Busfield will be the guest soloists.

The soprano sisters, from Ryhope, are embarking on careers as professional musicians. Sarah recently became principal soprano with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Gemma is studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire.

Their concert, at West Park Church, next to Park Lane interchange, will feature such Last Night Of The Proms' favourites as Wood's Sea Songs, Jerusalem and Land Of Hope And Glory.

Also in the programme are The Dambuster's March, Nimrod and popular songs from the war.

The orchestra has had commemorative medals struck, which will be presented by the Mayor and Mayoress of Sunderland to war veterans in the audience..

One of tonight's pieces was not heard during the conflict, however.

Fairground Suite, by Diana Hauber, from Fulwell, is having its world première.

The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets range from £5 to £10.

 Tel: 534 2413.
