AN inaugural concert by up-and-coming Wearside musicians was today hailed as a resounding success.

Sunderland's Old Parish Church was packed to the rafters for the city youth orchestra's first major performance.

The Holy Trinity Church, in Church Street East, one of Sunderland's most historic buildings, was full upstairs and downstairs with about 180 people for the colourful concert of song and dance on Sunday.

Dozens of youngsters, from 11 to 16 years old, took part in the event, which included carols, ballet and orchestral renditions of music from hymns to pop songs like Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody.

"It was excellent, a really great event which everybody thoroughly enjoyed," said organiser and conductor Rupert Hanson.

"People say nothing happens in Hendon or the East End but this proves it does, and that people are prepared to support it."

The concert raised £200, of which half was given to animal welfare organisation Pawz for Thought.

Sunderland Symphony Youth Orchestra was formed from a nucleus of young musicians from Usworth Youth Orchestra, with a steadily increasing membership since rehearsals began in September.

It is part of the ‘Music for All’ project through which Rupert aims to help the area's under-privileged with various events, based at the Holy Trinity Church.

Rupert wants to build up a range of events to bring the community together in Hendon and his native East End.

Plans include a big Concert in the Park event next year to celebrate VE day.
